We all are well-aware that March 8 is internationally celebrated as Women’s Day. Before we discuss how to make this women’s day special, let us check out the history behind it. 1975 was designated as the International Women’s Year by the United Nations. The same year, UN officially declared March 8 as international women’s day. This is done to honour the women’s achievements across various spheres. Women have had a long history of having to fight for everything starting from basic rights. Centuries later, the fight is far from over. While it is necessary that people treat women as equal beings every day and not just on March 8, it is a good reminder of how harsh the society has been to them. Thus, the day and the celebrations around it, matter to the society.
The actual fight for women’s rights, however, began much before 1975. Way back in February 1908, thousands of women in New York city marched across the streets demanding better work conditions. They were treated as second class employees. They had to face additional difficulties. Women’s wages were much lower. In addition, they had to deal with sexual harassment. The movement was probably the first in history when women realised what they were being deprived of, just because of their sex. In honour of these protests, the Socialist Party of America announced 28 February as the National Women’s Day in the year 1909. Similarly, you will find stories of women spearheading revolutionary movements in regions across the globe. Many countries have a designated National Women’s Day as well.
From being able to vote, to contesting in polls, from domestic abuse to workplace harassment, from being denied education to being discriminated in office spaces, women have had to fight their way through life. Women today are undoubtedly in a better position than their ancestors, but we still have a long way to go. This Women’s Day acknowledge the sacrifices made by the women you love and salute their sheer strength and courage to live and work in a society that (honestly) hasn’t been kind to them.
Here are some cool gift ideas for Women’s Day.
Handmade jewellery
In the recent years, we see a boom in small and creative businesses. These are run mostly by stay-at-home women or those who haven not been able to get back after a career break. Handmade jewellery is one such popular business. Support these creative women by buying gifts from them for those special women in your life. Small businesses even offer a great extent of customization. You can pick the colour, patterns, and designs for the jewellery. When they arrive, the pretty earrings and necklaces are sure to put a smile on the faces of your loved ones!

Personalized cupcakes
For those women with a sweet tooth, cupcakes are the perfect gift! You can even add a personal touch to the cupcakes. Print out your favourite images on the cupcakes or choose designs/images that would best describe the woman you are gifting. Unlike showpieces which just accumulate dust and sit on the corner of the shelf, consumables can be enjoyed. Order your favourite flavour or order cupcakes of different flavours so that everyone’s taste buds have a field day!

Custom dreamcatchers
Dreamcatchers are one of the prettiest gifts! Make it more special by including your memorable pictures with the lovely woman you are gifting. With customized dreamcatchers, we are again pushing support for small scale businesses. These craftspeople cannot afford marketing on a large scale. They are largely dependent on marketing by word-of-mouth. A lot of them, however, are super creative. Thus, impress your loved ones while supporting small businesswomen. This is a win-win!

A book collection
What you gift depends a lot on what kind of a person the women are – their likes and interests etc… If you have around you women that are voracious readers, no gift would beat a good book collection! Pick a genre that they would enjoy reading and you are sure to make them feel special!

Water bottle with women’s day quote
Isn’t it amazing how a tiny bit of customization applied on the most mundane objects put a smile on people’s faces? A water bottle with a special women’s day quote is both – a pocket-friendly and a memorable gift. It is an everyday object. Thus, it will remind the women how special they are even after the day is over. It is a useful gift as well.

Cushions with women’s day quotes on them
This is a cute and memorable gift for any woman – mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend… When they wake up every morning and go to bed every night, they are reminded of how strong and special they are to you! These cushions are available in a range of colours. Various beautiful quotes are available as well. Choose a shade that would complement the room’s aesthetics and boom! You have just added another beautiful element to the woman’s room! A present like this is sure to make your relationship with the woman, only stronger!

A women’s day special mug
Gifting mugs never goes out of fashion. If you are gifting a woman who is a sucker for beverages, what better gift than a special mug? The message on the mug is a cool reminder of the essence of being a woman! You will gift them a useful product and at the same time make them feel special! Isn’t that incredible?

Portrait
Gifts that require creativity are always special. If you are someone who is blessed with artistic talents, you may try to draw a portrait of the person by yourself. Otherwise, there are many talented artists out there who are ready to do the job. Whether or not you are inclined to art, a portrait seldom goes unappreciated. It is one of the very few gifts that will make the person feel truly special. A framed portrait is thus a cool gift idea!

A compact jewellery box
It is common for most women to receive a ton of accessories as gifts. They may purchase a lot too! Thus, it makes sense to gift them a jewellery box so that they can organize their accessories. It will not only help in shielding their precious jewels from dust and moisture; they will no more misplace their jewels. There is a huge variety of jewellery boxes available in the market. Choose one that will suit the liking of the woman you are gifting.

March 8 is a special day for every woman. You may present them with various beautiful gifts. But the best gift a man can give any woman is personal space and equal treatment. No materialistic gift can possibly ever come close to that! Cheers!!
